Today I came home to an interesting second reminder (the first being an 8.5″x11″ letter in my mailbox) hanging from my door knob:

If you’re asking yourself why that fabulously designed hanger might cause some concern in my mind, let me explain. This hanger, similar in design and size to most Chinese restaurant and cleaning crew hangers, is uniquely nicer than either of the aforementioned advertisements. First of all, this is the heaviest hanger that has ever hung from my door. It’s almost as thick as a book cover, which seems wildly unnecessary, but maybe this was just a stock paper that was on sale at their printer. Secondly, this is a waterproof hanger. As in, when you submerge it in water, there is no change in quality because it’s wearing its’ own little wetsuit. As a company that is very familiar with printing procedures, pricing, etc., I can say without a doubt that this is the most expensive hanger Dallas could have purchased (unless someone has started making them out of gold somewhere). Thirdly, this is an “ad” to remind me that the City of Dallas is going to start being more environmentally friendly.
So, City of Dallas, I ask you this: Why, when you’re telling me on your website that you want to “save valuable landfill space, preserve our environment, protect air quality and help teach generations the importance of recycling”, did you send me, and 169,999 of my neighbors (their figure, not mine), this ridiculously overpriced, oversized, SECOND reminder? Because this, as well as the first sheet of paper you sent me (envelope included), are going into the local landfill. Along with all my hard earned tax dollars.
By the way, these hangers were coated in such a way that they can’t even be recycled, so again, way to go City of Dallas.
Update: Found this out on my street today, so now I have two in my collection:

How does this make you feel? If you disagree, feel free to comment below or contact me, but if you feel the same way I do, let the City of Dallas Sanitation Services Director know.

Well – maybe they heard about the lane markers that Ft. Worth had purchased – that did not work in the snow – AND – they knew we would have more snow – according to the weather guy – who knows when – but it’s coming!!!! – so they wanted it to be indestructible for that event!!! I don’t know!

I hadn’t heard of the lane markers yet, but I’m a strong believer in spending dollars on snow safety in Texas; did you not know that we had 12 inches this year? Next year I’m building an igloo!

The money they saved by switching to just one day paid for those fliers. Genius!
Kristin, you can build an igloo, but I’m building an ice teepee.
